We invite you to participate in GEMS, our special needs ministry at Wheaton Bible Church. We believe God has blessed us with children who have special needs and has entrusted us with their care. The volunteers who serve in this ministry have compassionate hearts and a desire to share the love of Christ with these children and their families.
Special Needs Family Activities
Sunday Mornings
We have volunteer "buddies" who come each Sunday at 9:40 and 11:10 for one hour to work with a GEMS child. They assist in any way necessary to help the GEMS children have the best experience possible each week. The children’s ministry staff will work with parents to determine where your child will be placed and what we can do to provide a
valuable time each Sunday morning.
Parent Support Group
We meet the first Sunday of every month from 11:00-12:00 noon at Wheaton Bible Church. We discuss many topics such as social issues, school issues and family dynamics. We also share information regarding family opportunities such as summer retreats (Joni and Friends), upcoming workshops and conferences. We conclude each meeting with a time to share family concerns and support one another with prayer.
Special Events
We have fun as families and throughout the year we have a few planned special events such as: a picnic at the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Lisle, Fall Blowout at Wheaton Bible Church and a special Christmas party. We also plan respite nights when the volunteers will care for the GEMS children and their siblings so the parents can have a night out!
Volunteer Ministry Opportunity
Buddy Program
As a "buddy" to one of our children with special needs, you will be assigned a specific child and will work with him/her each week one to one. Training is provided at the Children’s Ministry Summit and other times throughout the year. No previous experience is required.
