Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will
fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel…

Ephesians 6:19

Paul asked for prayer that words would be given him whenever he opened his mouth so that he could fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.  Paul’s heart desired to make the most of every opportunity that he had to speak words to others, which would effectively communicate the good news of the gospel.

Despite Paul’s deep knowledge of the Scriptures and passion for evangelism, he was dependent upon the Holy Spirit to give him words that would reveal Jesus as the Savior of the world.  These were probably not so much words that might come to him in the moment, but words he had thought through and prayed about as the means for sharing his faith.  We, too, can prayerfully think through a simple gospel explanation.  Write it out to familiarize yourself with the wording, so that you can share it clearly and readily.

Words are essential for conveying truth.  The manner in which words are spoken is also significant.  Paul asked not merely for words, but words that would communicate the gospel without fear.  In what regard could Paul have been fearful?  Was he concerned about how his hearers might react?  Paul’s burden was that he might clearly articulate the gospel message in the hearing of others.  He understood that any response to his words was solely God’s responsibility and must be left in His hands.  We need to do the same.

The mystery of the gospel is the living God formulating a plan before the foundation of the world by which He would redeem men and women, boys and girls, from sin.  He would do it in a manner that would not jeopardize His perfect justice nor constrain His great love.  He sent His Son Jesus Christ to enter human history, live a life without sin, die a horrific death at our hands, and then rise from the dead as the Savior of the world.  People who are granted faith to believe in what God has done on their behalf in Jesus gain entry into His kingdom forever.  The mystery of the gospel is counterintuitive, strength arising out of weakness, life resulting from death, hope in the midst of adversity, love without requirement of reciprocation, freedom while in chains, joy supplanting mourning, goodness overcoming evil, and salvation without merit.

Questions for reflection and discussion:

  • If you have never done so, prayerfully write out an explanation of the gospel asking the Holy Spirit to give you the words.  Meditate upon what you have written and share it with a believing friend for feedback.  Pray for an opportunity to share the gospel with someone who needs to hear it.
  • What do you fear regarding making known the mystery of the gospel?
