For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:9-11

The physical resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith; claiming victory over sin and death is what gives the gospel its everlasting value. In Romans 6:9-11, the apostle Paul talks about the implications of Christ’s resurrection for believers, inviting Christians to embrace a life characterized by death to sin and fruitful living.

In the resurrection, Jesus defeated sin, death, and the grave. In Romans 6:9-11, Paul talks about how Jesus’ resurrection changes our lives. He wants us to live in a way that shows we’re done with sin and living close to God because of Jesus.

In Romans 6:9, Paul starts by saying how sure we can be about Jesus being alive again. He writes, “Since Christ was raised from the dead, He won’t die again; death can’t control Him anymore.” Unlike us who must deal with pain, sickness, life and death, Jesus defeated death for good. His coming back to life proves His victory over sin and His power over death.

Paul also talks about the motive for Jesus’ sacrifice. He says, “he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.” Jesus did not lose to sin on the cross, He won the biggest planned victory. By dying, He made a way for us to be reunited with God again.

Being close to God through Jesus also means having a strong relationship with Him and other Christians. We do this by talking to God in worship, reading and obeying the Bible, and loving others like Jesus did. Our lives should reflect that we belong to Jesus and that His love changes us.

In a different letter, Paul reminds the church that there are more important things than what we see and experience in this world. While we can offer ourselves and others the material blessings of a life in freedom, we must remember that everything we do here has an eternal consequence.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:1-3
