We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:6-8

In these verses, Paul highlights the diversity of spiritual gifts granted to believers by God’s grace. Each believer is uniquely gifted for improving and building up the body of Christ. Whether prophecy, service, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership, or mercy, every gift is essential and vital in advancing God’s kingdom. In 1 Corinthians 12:7-10, 28 and Ephesians 4:11 Paul lists a few additional gifts not included in this list.

Paul brings out the importance of using our gifts by the grace given to us. This implies not only exercising our gifts with confidence and boldness but also aligning them with the truth of God’s Word and the leading of His Spirit, guiding us to steward them wisely for God’s glory and the growth of His kingdom.

Paul also emphasizes the diversity of gifts within the body of Christ. As we saw yesterday, just as the human body has many parts each with its unique function, the church also comprises individuals with varying gifts and abilities. Rather than rating or comparing the gifts of others, we are called to embrace and celebrate our gifts, recognizing their importance in God’s kingdom economy.

Lastly, Paul encourages believers to exercise their gifts diligently, generously, and cheerfully. Whether our gift is teaching, serving, giving, or any other, we are to do so with enthusiasm and confidence, pouring ourselves wholeheartedly into the service of God and others. Our motivation should be love for God and love for our neighbors, remembering that others will witness this love and recognize we are Jesus’ disciples.

As we meditate on these questions, let us also remember that our gifts are not for our glory but for the glory of God. Let us humbly look at where we are investing our daily time and resources to find out how they glorify God and what adjustments we might be able to make to give more of our lives to Him.

Questions for reflection and discussion:

  • Have you ever wondered what unique spiritual gifts God has entrusted to you?
  • And how are you currently using them to serve others?
  • How can you cultivate a spirit of generosity and cheerfulness in the exercise of your gifts, reflecting God’s love and grace to those around you?
